Scholarship Programs

The Maine Chapter APWA has two scholarship programs as of 2001. The Chapter first funded a "Scholarship Fund" in the early 90's to annually award $500 to a University of Maine Civil Engineering student. Then in Spring 2001 the Chapter started a second scholarship fund with the Maine Technical Education Foundation. This fund will offer an annual $500 scholarship that will rotate between the seven technical college campuses across the state. The scholarships are intended to benefit those students majoring in the fields of civil engineering or related program that could lead to a career in public works.

University of MaineIn the early 90's the Chapter donated $500 annually to the University's Financial Aid Office and they selected a needy candidate. In 1995 the Chapter gave the University of Maine $6,000 to set up a self-sustaining endowment fund for the scholarship. Since then the Chapter has annually added to the endowment fund to bring the total worth to approximately $20,000. This fund now generates over $1,000 annually ($1,300 in 2000-01).

The Chapter has reached the goal we set in the early 90's to establish and increase the endowment value each year until a self-sustaining perpetual grant award in the amount of $1,000 was reached. The Chapter wishes to thank all members and contributors for their support and help in promoting the scholarship program. Congratulations to all!

The Maine Technical College offers the Chapter an opportunity to fund those Maine students who pursue a technical degree in one of the seven colleges. The Maine Technical College has campuses in the north, central and southern areas of the state which allows the Chapter to reach out and help students in the far reaches of the large geographic state area.

In April 2001 the Chapter donated $2,000 to begin the endowment fund along with a $500 donation to allow the first grant award to be made for the 2001-02 academic year. The Chapter is committed to add at least $3,000 to the endowment fund so it will become self-sustaining under the Maine Technical College guidelines. It is the Chapter's goal to see this scholarship fund increased to generate at least a $500 annual grant.
