    State Championship FAQ

What is a Snow Plow Roadeo?

A snow plow Roadeo is a test of driving skills through an obstacle course. Points and time are kept during the course and the team with the lowest total is declared the winner.

    Who is eligible?

Full time Municipal, DOT, and Turnpike employees will be allowed to compete. Sorry, no private contractors. The State is broken up into 16 Counties, MDOT, and the Turnpike Authority. Two two-person teams will represent each county and organization. Each county and organization will decide how they wish to send their respective representatives (i.e., lottery, designate a different team each year, or deciding by competition).

How do I find out what my
     county is doin
g?

Below is a list of the APWA County Representatives. It is your responsibility to contact your County Representative to let him know of your interest. He will not be calling you. All interested towns must notify their representative of their intent to participate by May 1st.

    What equipment is eligible
    to compete?

Single-axle plow trucks with plow and wing are eligible. The plows and wings will be chained up 2" - 4" to allow movement through the course. Trucks will be provided at the State Championship. The competition will be in a automatic transmission trucks.

    When will County
     champions be selected?

All County, MDOT, and turnpike champions must be designated no later than Tuesday, June 1st. Contact your APWA representative for your competition or selection dates.

     What's the difference
     between the State course
     and the County course?

The County courses are designed to give each team an idea of what to expect in the State championship. However, fewer than ten judges and scorers are needed for the County competition, where the State competition requires 20 judges, scorers, and maintenance people. In the State competition, the course is more difficult and is set up to challenge a driving team. The course design is kept secret until the day of the event. In the State competition each team will have to perform a "circle check" on a vehicle. Basically, it requires the team to find as many defects as possible within a ten minute time period (tail light, flat tire, body damage, etc. - defects which can be found without tearing the truck apart!).

     When and where is the
     State championship?

Each County representative has the specifics to the State course. The State Championship Roadeo will be held at the Annual Highway Congress on the first Thursday in June at the Skowhegan Fairgrounds. The competition will be in the morning, which will allow all the teams to partake in classes, seminars, other competitions, and see Maine's biggest and best equipment show. If you missed the Congress last year, don't miss it this year. Our equipment show is the best in Maine. It allows your operators to get in and take each piece on a "test drive" or dig or plow or grade!! We have a large "try-out" area, so come and see what all the excitement is about.

    How can I help?

If you can help in any way, please contact your County APWA representative. He will need help in setting up cones and barricades and educating scorers and judges. Also, encourage competition in your County. Each County will hopefully send their best team so this will truly identify the State's best team.

    Prizes ?

Of course we have prizes! Each competitor will receive a hat and a T-shirt with the State
championship competition logo. The first three places will receive cash prizes, and a largeplaque for their department. The first place team will also receive "Champions" jackets which will serve to designate the winners as the best drivers in the State. Also, the winning team will be home to the Snow-Plow Roadeo Trophy until the next June. The winning team's County, Town, and drivers' names will be permanently engraved on the trophy.
The Chapter will pay for the air line tickets, car rental, and registration for the Maine State Champions to participate in the National Snowplow Roadeo at the APWA Western Snow and Ice Conference in Colorado. The winners are responsible for food and lodging.
